The hacker who broke into Amazon’s website on Friday night may have been motivated by a desire to sell more games, according to the person who has spoken with him.
But the motive appears to have been a desire not to lose his job, according a person familiar with the situation.
Amazon has not yet confirmed the report.
The hacker, who identified himself only as “Papa,” has reportedly used social engineering to get a hold of the personal information of hundreds of thousands of people who purchased games from the online retailer.
He then posted the information online, which prompted Amazon to block the information, the person familiar said.
Amazon has not confirmed the story.
“He was trying to sell games to people and get money for them,” the person said.
“We’re not sure if that’s a legitimate reason for what happened.”
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The person told CNN that the hacker may have obtained the personal details of some of the victims.
This is the first time the hacker has contacted us, he said.
He has a number of contacts that he could call in case he needs to speak with us again.
He is a very active hacker.
We are working to resolve this.
Amazon did issue a statement Friday night, saying that the company “is taking steps to mitigate the threat.”
“The company takes the security of our customers and associates very seriously and has strengthened security protocols to prevent unauthorized access to Amazon’s systems,” the statement read.
The New York Times reported earlier this week that the man who hacked into Amazon was working for a software company called Rapid7.
He had been living in Germany and was using the name “Krzysztof Krebs.”
The Times said that in a chat with the Times, Krebs told the paper that he was a self-described hacker who had hacked into a number to sell digital downloads on Amazon.
The Times also said that he had been arrested and was facing charges in Germany.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the hacker’s identity had been known to Amazon.
In the interview with the newspaper, Kreb said that Amazon had “failed me, but that I have failed everyone who has had to pay for this.”
“It’s a sad situation because it has been such a great experience for me, and I am a very happy person,” he said in the interview.
The company told CNN it was “monitoring the situation.”
A spokesman for Amazon did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Amazon does not have a website, and the company’s public website does not appear to be updated as of Sunday afternoon.
